Hormone Consults

Dr. Jillian Smithers, a.k.a. The Hormone Doctor, is a naturopathic medical doctor specially trained in anti-aging and functional medicine through the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and her memberships with several anti-aging medical bodies. She combines her naturopathic philosophy with her background in biology, psychology and neuroscience to address hormone imbalances with a holistic philosophy.

Everyone's story is individual. Even though many women share similar symptoms, how they feel overall and what their treatments look like can be very different and this is why Dr. Smithers personalizes every client's treatment plan to meet them where they are and help them to attain the results that they desire.

Although her practice is very full and always sitting close to capacity, Dr. Smithers continues taking on new clients because she knows how many women struggle with these symptoms and her one-of-a-kind practice is made specifically with them in mind. Unfortunately, she's not able to take on every single client who expresses interest, so she has established a new client application.

What is the process of working together?

Taking the initial step towards establishing care with a new doctor can be daunting, especially when it is out of pocket. Dr. Smithers understands that when you choose to work with her one-on-one, you are making an investment, so the first step that she recommends is to schedule a Discovery Session only once your new patient application is approved.

She happily offers this time as a meet & greet so that you two can review your symptoms and concerns, she can answer any questions that you may have, and she can also review the costs associated with her care. This consultation* is offered as an introduction to Dr. Smithers and provides you both an opportunity to meet virtually before establishing care. This consult does not create a doctor-patient relationship and no treatment recommendations will be given under any circumstances.

Following the discovery session, Dr. Smithers typically orders lab work to be reviewed at the initial consultation. The initial consultation lasts for one hour and includes a medical intake and very detailed laboratory review. A comprehensive treatment plan will be provided following that appointment. Follow up appointments thereafter occur most often 3-4 months later and may continue on that frequency or up to once/year or two. Patients must been seen within a 24 month (two year) period to remain active, but if they are prescribed any medications then they will need to be seen once/year with labs to maintain the prescription(s). In cases of some prescription, follow ups and labs may be required every 6 months.

*At the time of booking the Discovery Session, a non-refundable $50 deposit is required, which will be put towards the initial consultation if you choose to work with Dr. Smithers. If you choose not to establish care and move forward with Dr. Smithers, the $50 is not refunded.

How much do visits cost and will insurance cover them?

Dr. Smithers does not offer direct insurance billing of any kind, however, she is happy to provide patients with a billing summary, by special request, that they may submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Possible reimbursement ultimately depends on the patient's individual insurance plan and benefits and should not be relied on as a guarantee. In most cases, it is very unlikely that insurance will reimburse any costs.

Labs can be run through insurance or paid for up-front through Dr. Smithers' office. Advanced diagnostic lab testing, such as food sensitivity panels, neurotransmitter testing, micronutrient testing, etc. are not covered by insurance and are cash pay. If patients choose to have labs submitted to insurance, any balances/bills received afterwards are entirely their responsibility and not the responsibility of Dr. Smithers.

The initial consultation/visit costs $325 and follow up appointments are $150 for 30 minutes and $185 for 45 minutes. Payment is always due at the time of service and cards will be run immediately after the appointment, whether that is in-office or virtual. For more specific information about typical follow up frequency, cost of treatments, etc., Dr. Smithers can provide greater insight during the Discovery Session. Note: the cost of consultations does not differ between in-office or virtual consults.

When can I expect to see results?

Most patients see improvements within the first 4 weeks, however, it all depends on where they're starting, how much information they provided during their consult, and how much they are committed to making changes. There is no magic pill that will do the work and it is up to the patient to take responsibility for their health, but we will always be there along the way whenever they need support.

Treating the root cause is not an overnight treatment, and unfortunately, there is not a light switch that we can flip to make instantaneous changes. Like everything, you will only get out of it what you put into it. Some patients come in to us with symptoms that they've had for more than a decade and the longer a symptom has been present, the longer it will take to improve/resolve.

What is the cancellation policy?

A valid credit card is required to schedule any appointment and will be automatically collected through the online scheduling software when making any appointment. In order to schedule, patients will be required to make an account, which is where they can log in at any time to cancel or reschedule their appointment if needed.

After making an appointment, patients will receive a confirmation email within several minutes. As the appointment approaches, they will receive a reminder email 4 days prior to the appointment (unless they schedule within a 4 day time-frame) and a reminder text 2 days and 1 hour before, unless they opt out in their online account.

When patients schedule an appointment, that spot is reserved for them. Dr. Smithers often has a waitlist, so it's important that we have enough time to schedule someone else if you are unable to make it. We understand that changes may need to be made, but we ask that any cancellations or reschedules are done at least 48 hours prior to the appointment*.

*Cancellation Policy Effective May 1, 2020: Appointments can be rescheduled or canceled up to 48 hours prior to the appointment time by logging into the patient account. Anything after that time will require the client to contact the office directly at 602.576.6640 and is subject to a fee of 50% of the total cost of the service scheduled. If a client no shows an appointment, they will be subject to a fee of 100% of the total cost of the service. A no-show Discovery Session has a fee of $50.

As a naturopathic medical doctor and functional medicine practitioner, Dr. Smithers has focused her practice entirely on hormonal heath, including gut health and detoxification as they relate to hormone balance.

Though she is trained as such, she does not practice as a primary care physician. She has chosen to devote her entire practice to sex hormone, thyroid, and adrenal gland dysfunction as these are the areas where she sees so many women struggle and believes that conventional medicine leaves a lot of these women feeling unheard and unwell. There's got to be more options than birth control, right?

If you are looking to work with someone who will really listen to you, support you, and help you discover the root cause(s) of your symptoms, then we invite you to apply to become a client below.
